From the Archives: Remembering Airlie
Historically BISA has always appreciated the value in finding diverse ways to communicate and express yourself as you work through the implications of your brain injury.
In our archives we remember a poet who found herself in “Locked In” syndrome, with so much expression to be shared but no means of communication initially available. Airlie Kirkham was supported to find solutions with communication technology, and subsequently shared some beautiful expressions of the world through her poetry, of which she published two volumes along with her memoir, “Light at the End of the Tunnel”.
In our 30th year, we remember Airlie with her poem “Hope”.
Hope
We need hope
ever before us,
Hope spurs us on.
It is our strength.Enduring passions
are created by hope.
We live for our dreams,
our aspirations.Without hope we are lost,
homeless without direction.
Hope is our compass,
our direction finder.
Hope for quality in our life.
In memoriam, Airlie Kirkham 1965–2022
