BISE Group 2021 Program Overview:

January 20th – Setting Up For Success In 2021

In this session we discuss our goals and aspirations for the year ahead, and what to do when things don’t go to plan.

February 3rd – Employment after ABI

Andrew Pidgeon, who has lived experience of ABI and knows works under the title of ABI Specialist, joins us for a conversation around getting back to work after a brain injury.

March 3rd – Social Communication

Communication is key for connecting with others, and a brain injury can make the subtle skills of social communication more difficult. Led by one of our resident speech pathologists, they will discuss “unwritten rules” of social engagement and give us tips for better conversations and relationships.

April 7th – Getting in Touch with Nature

In this session we will get out into nature by visiting our beautiful Adelaide Botanic Gardens (weather permitting). The benefits of spending time outdoors, and how to immerse ourselves in the experience, will be a focus of our discussion.

May 5th – Creative Expression

Expressing yourself creatively is a great way to get in touch with yourself, is good for our brains, promotes wellbeing, and is quite simply a lot of fun! This relaxed session will be led by an art therapist who will take us through some enjoyable creative exercises. No prior art experience is needed.

June 2nd – Mindfulness

All too often us humans spend our precious time and energy focusing on the past or worrying about the future. The antidote to this is to practice Mindfulness – which is all about connecting to the present moment – and this month we’ll learn useful techniques for doing just that.

July 7th – Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

For a range of reasons, problems with sleep are common after a brain injury. In this session we share knowledge and strategies for establishing healthy sleep routines, to give you the best chance of a good night’s rest.

August 4th – Nutrition and the Brain

A nutritious diet is one of the pillars of brain health and recovery following ABI. There is so much advice about what to eat and what not to eat that it can be overwhelming, so in this session an expert will cut through the clutter and provide clarity on this important topic.

September 1st – Technology

Learn about how to utilise the best of modern technology to overcome challenges after brain injury, connect socially and manage a busy schedule. Join us for a look at everything from getting the most out of our smart phones to high-tech gadgets designed to help you live more independently.

October 6th – Exercise

Regular exercise has proven benefits for our physical health, mental health, and our brains. Getting our bodies moving is a wonderful way to boost recovery after an ABI, and one of our resident physiotherapists will talk us through making exercise work for you, including if you have physical challenges.

November 3rd – Gardening

When it comes to healthy activities, gardening is right up there. It gets us moving, puts us in touch with nature, and all in all is a very rewarding way to spend time. This will be a session packed full of practical tips to get involved at home or in the community and to take your garden to the next level!

December 1st – Preparing for the Festive Season

The festive season means different things to different people, and in this session we will discuss the joys, pressures, and challenges of this time of year, as well as sharing tips for making the most of it. This session is also a celebration of the connections and memories formed over the past year of the BISE Group!
