Finding and Keeping a Job

If you are thinking about finding or returning to employment after your acquired brain injury (ABI), your National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan can assist you.

You may be thinking about work similar to what you have previously done, or you may be wondering what other type of work might be better suited to you following your injury.


Help from BISA

Brain Injury SA (BISA) has staff that specialise in understanding brain injury and how to assist you achieve your goals.

BISA’s Finding and Keeping a Job service has been developed with an understanding of people living with brain injury. It recognises that you may not have worked for a long time, if at all or you may have an extensive work history. You may not now know what you can do or how to best utilise your experience for future employment following your ABI. BISA also appreciates that knowing where to start looking for different types of work can be daunting, and you need to find a way to unpack the options and explore your work capabilities in some detail.

Ways we will assist you include but are not limited to:

  • Carefully selected assessment tools to have a detailed understanding of knowing what work for you should look like
  • Work exploration methods to build a picture of how and where you can work
  • Safely testing out ideas, including exploration in carefully selected workplaces
  • Sharing ideas and experiences in groups, developing confidence and ways to best match work to your abilities and capacity.

Your finding and keeping a job program will help you shape an employment goal that you have confidence in achieving that is tailored to you, including paid work, voluntary work, micro-enterprise or other ways you can contribute your strengths and capacity.

Utilising Your NDIS Plan to Help You Find and Keep a Job

Assistance with finding and keeping a job can be funded from either the Capacity Building part of your NDIS plan or you can utilise your Core Support allocation. In utilising your NDIS plan to find a pathway to work you can do, paid or volunteering, BISA recommends that you may need some of both.

BISA can work with you to utilise your NDIS plan to progress towards your goal of work. Therapy staff can work with you to identify your specific skills and abilities, and help you identify what you need to avoid in management of your brain injury in a workplace, finding a way forward.

Once your goal for employment is established it may be that you are best assisted to achieve it through a DES or Disability Employment Service provider. Alternatively, BISA may assist you progress to job seeking and utilising support funded from your NDIS plan to take up opportunities identified.
