After a brain injury, people find themselves in very different stages of recovery and will have varying abilities and challenges as part of everyday life. An injured brain can affect physical capacity, memory and associated skills we have learned, our speech and sight, our emotional state and control, our strength and our stamina.
Importantly, most people after acquiring a brain injury, still seek to be involved in community activities and events where they can be an active and included member of society – but many barriers exist that make it difficult to do so.
Last year, for the first time, BISA worked with the City to Bay team to ensure that anyone who wanted to be involved in the event – but wasn’t able to sign up for 3km because they couldn’t walk or propel themselves that far, could join in as part of a relay team, where everyone does a small part of the race – as much as they can and as part of a bigger team.
Though not quite a typical relay, we likened it to a snowball effect where those registered as part of our team collected new participants along the course – growing the team every few hundred meters and finishing together as one big team.
Our goal for this year is to make the team even bigger than last year, highlighting how simple it is to make an event inclusive for everyone with a few creative adaptations.
There are a number of ways you can get involved to support us:
- Registering for the City to Bay and joining the Brain Injury SA team through choosing to run/walk/wheel the half marathon or 12, 6 or 3km distances
- Joining the BISA relay ‘snowball’ team by speaking to one of the Brain Injury SA staff at your closest hub and letting them know you are interested in participating
- Creating a fundraising page and asking for donations from friends, family, colleagues to support and encourage our team – with fundraising dollars helping us to purchase team t-shirts and to have an end of City to Bay race celebration
- Ask your workplace to become a corporate supporter, by asking staff to join our team and holding a fundraising event – such as a casual clothes day – to raise money to help us reach our goals!
