The Show
“A New Brain” by William Finn.
This is a much-anticipated first for South Australia.
“A New Brain manages to be one of the most life-affirming, most heartfelt musicals written in the last decades of the twentieth century…”
Scott Miller (Author, composer)
A New Brain is a show about making the most out of life in the face of adversity.
When a frustrated composer is confronted with a terminal illness, he finds comfort in the healing power of art. The show is in fact the William Finn’s autobiographical account of his own battle for life when he was afflicted with a seemingly terminal illness. Initially diagnosed with a brain tumour it turned out to be an arteriovenous malformation which was repaired.
The show’s characters are his family, his agent, his lover, a homeless woman, medical staff and a frog which is part of his fantasies and temporary confusion.
There is a cast of 12, an orchestra of nine and more than 20 songs.
It is a comedy with drama and emotional themes about many kinds of relationships, the meaning of life, the healing power of music and time and not wanting to waste time, especially when given a second chance at life.
The final song, “I feel so much spring”, proclaims a happy ending with hope and joy.
